It was a slow night at the Rocketfish on Thursday, but is was oh so fun once again. We sang a bunch of great songs, but the the highlight was the “Uncomfortable” Rockblock.

KJPaul Recordings getting better and better!
I am starting to get the recording thing down and the quality of the recordings have been improving quite a bit over time. For example, check out the recordings for Sunday nights karaoke at Dalva or Monday at the Lookout. There is a lot of timing and juggling of priorities involved and there are a lot of subtleties. Here are some of them:
- how much reverb to add
- keeping the volumes from creeping into the clipping zone
- vocal levels vs music levels for each singer/mic
- mute/unmute unused mics to minimize/add noise
- how much compression to add to each mic in use to either
- fill out the voice
- or compliment the singers dynamic range
- add or reduce the singers mid-range
- keep the volumes in the room as well as for the singers in check
- separate EQ-ing and levels for the recordings vs the room
- label each recording for the website
- mark which recordings go on the site and which don’t
- keep track of who is waiting and who has left for the night
- MC the event
- Keep the crowd going, dance and have fun
- figure out who is next based on
- how long have they waited
- have they had a chance to sing yet
- is their group happy with how often they have been called
- how many people are in the queue and will everyone even get to sing
- personalities
- special needs like is it their birthday, need to catch BART etc.
- have they sung in a group sing
I could go on…there is a lot to keep track of… and then to do all that while people are talking to me, I am drinking booze, and then there is the most important part of my job
flirting with the girls!
I will be adding the ability to log into kjpaul.com so you can manage which songs are available and in what order they play etc.. You will be able to rate songs and although you won’t be able to see how a song is rated, it will effect which songs make it to the best of pages etc. that I will be adding… It will be a couple of months…so be patient. Even more big improvements are coming!
Now 20,000+ recordings online!
I sang for my 20,000th recording last night (1/9/12) at The Lookout last night. I also sang my 10,000th recording back on April.
Shirts came off at Rocketfish Karaoke!
Last week a group came in to Rocketfish for the first time on a karaoke night. They were there when I started at 8pm and stayed until close. They were having a great time. At the end of the night I said, as I often do, “and you can hear the entire night again tomorrow on KJPaul.com!” They were super excited about it and I even played a little sample clip for them on the spot before they left.
The next day I saw a spike in traffic on KJPaul.com because they were all listening to it and they passed the URL around their office and to their friends. When I got to Rocketfish last night (12/22/2011) there was a large group of them there waiting to sing. It got a little crazy! Here are some photos and the recordings!
Kids Karaoke at Rocketfish
Kid friendly karaoke, Rocketfish Lounge every Thursday on Potrero Hill.
Full bar. Amazing food. Karaoke for kids and adults. Something for everybody!
Full bar. Amazing food. Karaoke for kids and adults. Something for everybody!
Besides the AMAZING FOOD at the Rocketfish Lounge, the fact that there is karaoke for kids and adults is one of my favorite things. Everybody loves kids karaoke, especially when the kids can really sing and Kate Cooley ROCKED it at the Rocketfish Lounge on Thursday. She was a little shy at first, but after her first song the crowd whet wild and she was hooked! You have to listen to her first song! It is AWESOME!
Here are all for the songs Kate Cooley sang: KJPaul.com/singer/kate+cooley

Karaoke Word Challenge at CaffCom
Caffeinated Comics Karaoke Word Challenge
It was a great evening of karaoke and the Karaoke Word Challenge (KWC) game was a success! I love the night and will do it again once or twice before the end of the year.
KWC “Toe” round
The first word was “Toe”. Nick was the winner of the first round with the line “dancing toe to toe” in the Roxy Music song “Love is the Drug”.
KWC “Skin” round
The word for Round 2 was “Skin”. Ash was the winner of round 2 with the line “my skin is bare, my skin is theirs” in the Filter song “Take A Picture”.
The “Skin” round was a bit long with 23 songs which left people out of the game a little too long and as a result I have decided to change how the game is played a little. Next time I run the game I will group the songs and let people choose songs to sing from the list rather than having everyone try to figure out possible songs on their own. Then, when it is their turn they can either sing one of the songs on the list or bow out of the round.
The recordings on the event are top notch. You can see:
The entire night
The “Toe” round (Round 1 winner)
The “Skin” round (Round 2 winner)
Happy 11-11-11
I walked into Rocketfish Lounge last night and there was a crowd waiting to sing karaoke. I started the karaoke just after 8pm and it was amazing! The singing was breathtaking! http://kjpaul.com/11/11/10/
Rocketfish Karaoke in Potrero Hill rules! Don’t forget to ask for the free KJ Roll! Karaoke, booze and fabulous sushi! Thursday nights are the best!
Recordings syncing once again
Some of you noticed that the recordings from the past few weeks were not matching up with the songs listed. The issue started when I had to restore my laptop from my backups. It turned out that I lost about 500 records, so there are a couple of weeks worth of songs missing. I still have those recordings, but they are currently stored as orphaned files on my server. I may or may not try to restore the links to those files. If there is a particular one you want restored I may be able to restore it for you. You can find them at: kjpaul.com/songs/2011/orphans/
UPDATE: I moved the files into their individual nights, so now they are in the flow by date, but they are named “Orphan”. If I actually find the missing records I will add the names and titles etc. In the mean while, it is pretty easy to scan through the nights if you want to grab your songs…just hit “Play All” and click the >> until you hear the song you are looking for.
The orphaned files start at http://kjpaul.com/11/09/21/ and go though http://kjpaul.com/11/10/03/. As always you can see the list of all the nights at: http://kjpaul.com/karaoke/recordings/
Rocketfish–best ever!
Sometimes a karaoke night just goes off. Well, it happened at the Rocketfish Lounge on Thursday. It was the perfect storm of people, food, drinks and singing.
Kenichi was giving an amazing KJ Roll to whoever came in and asked for it. You just had to say you were there for KJ Paul and you got the FREE KJ Roll. The roll had tempura shrimp, spicy tuna and tofu in it. It was very tasty. He will be doing the same next week, so come in and take advantage of it…just say you are there for KJ Paul.
I sang a few back to back songs to get the night going, but once the crowd started singing it kept going and going, for a good five hours of karaoke! People were super supportive and fun. The crowd went wild for every song. It was just one of those nights. Here are the Rocketfish Lounge karaoke recordings for Thursday October 13, 2011.
New Books + Recording pages miss-match
I recently had to restore my karaoke laptop from backup and in the process an error occurred in the file numbering, so some of the recordings are out of sync with the song pages. So, when you play a karaoke recording it may not be what it says it is. I am aware of this and will fix it soon.
The good news is that I fixed a lot of the file names so the naming of the songs will be better and I created new song books. You can see the books online now at KJPaul.com/files/books/.
I will be printing new books soon. I will print By Artist books and By Song book. I will add the “Potential Duets” pages to the front of the “By Artist” books and the Spanish pages to the back of the by Artist books.
